Welcome to the Town of DeWitt Sustainability page!

Sustainability most commonly means “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future.” Practically, sustainability refers to three broad themes--economic, social, and environmental—that all must be coordinated and addressed to ensure the long term viability of our community and our planet.

DeWitt is making great strides toward balancing economic, social, and environmental interests. We recently completed a Greenhouse Gas Inventory, adopted a Sustainability Plan setting goals and a timeline to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, we will be completing Comprehensive Tree Inventory of publicly owned trees and will create an Urban Forest Management Plan that will guide practices to maintain healthy and robust trees on publicly owned lands, we are making improvements to our storm water infrastructure to reduce the amount of runoff entering watersheds, we are monitoring the activities of nuisance and invasive pests, we have rain barrels available to specific residences under a Save the Rain grant, we adopted the New York Unified Solar Permit to make the permitting process easier for residential and commercial property owners, and we are creating framework to create a pedestrian friendly and connected community.

All of these initiatives occur because our Town Supervisor wholly believes in the importance of them and supports them. In addition, the Sustainability Committee, the DeWitt Advisory Conservation Committee (DACC) and the Tree Committee work in concert with the Town. Like us on Facebook today!
