What are my responsibilities as a property owner?
Homeowners are responsible for leaks and water problems from the property line into their home with the exception of the water meter. Keep meter accessible to read and to change out.
Why is my bill so high?
If you notice an unusually high bill during a billing cycle, the first thing to do would be to check for leaks. If nothing is visible, do a meter reading and do not use water for a period of at least four (4) hours, then check the meter again, if the numbers have changed, you could have a leak.
One of the most common leaks is a silent leak from your toilet. Dye strips are available in the Water Department Office to check your toilet for a leak. You can also use food coloring. Take the lid off the toilet tank. Place the food coloring or dye strips in the tank. Place the lid back onto the toilet tank. Wait approximately 30 minutes. If you see the color in the toilet bowl, you have a silent leak.
If no leaks are detected, please call the office.
What needs to be done when I am selling or buying a house?
The property owner should notify the Water Department when selling their home. The new owner should make sure all prior water charges are taken care of in the closing or the new owner will be responsible for the previous owner’s bill as liens stay with the property.
What needs to be done if I am renting a property?
The Town of DeWitt does not bill tenants unless the owner has submitted in writing to the Water Department, a request to bill tenants. Ultimately, the property owner is responsible for payments.
Why is my water discolored?
Discolored water may be caused by a water main break or a fire hydrant that may have been opened in your area. Please notify the Water Department (315) 446-3734 x 4 if you have discolored water.
How do I pay my bill?
The Water Department does not process bill payments.
The Town Clerk Office processes the payments.
You can mail it in, place it in the Drop Box to the left of the Town Hall entrance, come into the Town Hall during regular business hours or go to Xpress pay link on this Department's page.
