Tax Department Description and Responsibilities

The Tax Department is responsible for the collection of property taxes levied on the approximately 11,000 parcels located in the Town of DeWitt.  This includes the September collection of School Taxes for the three school districts that cover portions of the town, and the January collection of Town and County Taxes. Inquiries regarding tax bills and payments are handled by the department’s staff.

The Tax Department also collects payments of water bills on behalf of the Town of DeWitt Water Department.

Tax Notice
The School Tax bills are mailed in the beginning of September; the Town & County Tax bills are mailed at the end of December to property owners without escrow accounts. While the Town of DeWitt Tax Office makes every effort to ensure property owners receive their tax bill, it is the responsibility of the property owner to know when taxes are due and payable.

REAL PROPERTY TAX LAW §922

3. The failure to mail any such statement, or the failure of any such owner to receive the same, shall not in any way affect the validity of the taxes or interest prescribed by law with respect thereto.

L. 1958, c. 959, eff. Oct. 1, 1959

If your tax bill was requested by a bank, the tax information was sent to the bank and not to your home. If you did not receive a tax bill and believe you should have, please contact the Tax Department so a copy can be sent to you.

In addition, neither the Receiver of Taxes nor any other official has legal authority to waive statutory interest charges. Interest charges are fixed by the Real Property Tax Law.

Tax Exemptions
Tax exemptions, including the STAR, are handled through the Assessor's Department. For Basic Star Questions, please contact New York State at (518)457-2036.

Tax Payments
Tax Payments are accepted online, by mail or in person at the DeWitt Tax Office. (Please note: the Tax Office is located on the second floor). Payments accepted in person are cash, check or money order. Payments made by mail should be check or money order. Please do not send cash through the mail. The mailing address is: DeWitt Tax Office; 5400 Butternut Dr., East Syracuse NY 13057. If you pay by mail, the USPS, UPS, or FedEx postmarks will be used as date of receipt. A postage meter cancellation is not acceptable.

Online payments can be made at the Onondaga County website at: www.ongov.net/rpts

To assist residents who are elderly and/or disabled, third party notification of tax bills are offered. Property owners who are disabled or 65 years of age or older and own a one, two, or three family home, may designate an adult consenting third party to receive duplicate copies of tax bills and notices of unpaid taxes. In order to receive this service, you must fill out a third party notification form RP-923 (link), or available in the Tax Office.

Many residents have their taxes escrowed with their lending institution. The Tax Office updates bank codes prior to each billing cycle. It is the lending institution's responsibility to notify this office of any additions or deletions of accounts. Many banks contract with Tax Service Organizations (TSOs), which are agencies that service escrow accounts for the banks. These organizations provide us with a listing of their customers and their identifying account numbers. In the event that a resident received a bill that should have gone to the bank, it is still the responsibility of the bank to call for that bill. If the bill should have gone to the homeowner, but went to the bank, it is the homeowner's responsibility to know that taxes are due. Directions for obtaining a duplicate tax bill are below. The failure to mail a statement - or the failure of a property owner to receive a statement - will not affect the validity of the taxes or interest prescribed by law. (New York State Real Property Tax Law §922).

If you did not receive a bill and believe you should have, please follow the directions below to obtain a duplicate bill.

Tips for locating your property: Do not use a prefix or suffix for your street address. For example, if your address is 122 West Maple Street, only type Maple in the street name field.

After you locate your property, click on the Tax Map Number. From there you can view/print your tax bill, previous payments, and receipts. If any taxes are currently due, the amount will be shown on this screen along with the ability to pay by echeck or credit card. **There is a service charge for Credit Cards and online check payments.

Using the County website you can:

  • print a copy of your tax bill
  • print previous tax receipts; and
