How much are Building, Planning and Zoning fees?
When is a development permit needed?
Generally, a permit is needed for any building construction; any structural or architectural improvement or alteration; or installation or replacement of a fence, pool, shed, heating devices, signs, etc.
What about solid waste/refuse/recycling services?
Residential garbage for one, two or three family dwellings is collected weekly by the current hauler, Butler Disposal, along with recyclables. Brush and yard waste is collected by the Town Highway Department from May through October with leaves vacuumed thereafter.

How can I get help for sewer problems?
If you suspect the problem is outside your home/building you may call a plumber or the Onondaga County Sewer Maintenance office at (315) 435-3157. This number is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If the problem is on the “public side” (i.e. in the street or in the sewer lateral to your property line) then the County and Town are responsible for repairs. If the sewer problem is on the private property side, the owner is generally responsible for repairs or maintenance.

What can be done about water in my yard/basement?
Seasonal water on a property or in a below-grade room such as a basement is common and is generally the responsibility of the property owner. If another property owner is directly placing water on your property by way of piping or the water is dirty as a result of soil erosion contact Planning & Zoning at (315) 446-3910 x 3 or the Highway Department at (315) 437-8331.
Do I need an electrical or plumbing permit?
Electrical work involving circuit additions or extensions and a new or replacement panel box requires a permit. In the Town of DeWitt such permits and inspections are provided by a Town-authorized inspection agency that you will hire. Currently there are three town-authorized agencies. Plumbing work involving the extension, relocation or addition of any fixture or line requires a permit from Plumbing Control of Onondaga County.

How do I obtain a Certificate of Compliance or Zoning Compliance letter?
Send a letter with your specific request, name and contact information, property identification (i.e. address and/or tax parcel number), and $65 check made out to Town of DeWitt to the address below. Please allow ten business days for completion of the research and inspection.
