SUPERVISOR

MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR EDWARD M. MICHALENKO, PH.D.

This season we have been fortunate to have a mild winter, saving costs and allowing other construction to be completed ahead of time.

The Town of DeWitt will be hosting our 31st Annual Earth Day Clean-up and 2nd Annual Fair. The Earth Day Fair will feature hands-on and informational booths that promote sustainability efforts. Please attend our fair, bring your family and friends, and consider volunteering for our Earth Day Clean-up; it is a great opportunity to learn more and get involved in the community. Please see the enclosed flyer for detailed information. I hope you to see you there.

The installation of Solar Panels on our Town Hall building, as well as, the Ryder Park Pavilion are now complete. To view the Town’s generated electricity, Co2 and cost savings visit: http://www.townofdewitt.com/TownHallSolarPanels.aspx or in our lobby is an active monitor which displays our savings and other news and information.

Look for the Sustainability Committee’s e-newsletter in the coming months. If you would like to receive it via email, please sign up on our website.

A new walking bridge, located by the aqueduct, has been constructed on the Erie Canal to allow for more access and connectivity in our Town’s trail system. Soon the Butternut Creek Trail from Wegmans will cross Kinne Road and directly link to the Canal Towpath.

The Town Board has passed a Tree Policy and we have recently become a Tree City USA. Our DeWitt Advisory Conservation Commission will be conducting a tree inventory and preparing a Forest Management Plan for the Town. The Town will be offering free street trees on a limited basis. For more information please contact Mike Moracco at mmoracco@townofdewitt.com or 446-3910 ext. 136.

The underground tanks have now been removed from the Colvin Street Gas Station. Look for an announcement this spring, we will be seeking your input on traffic configurations.

The conceptual  design phase has been completed for Carrier Park. The complex currently includes two (2) tennis courts, a basketball and volleyball court, a pavilion, playground and walking trail. Each of these will be upgraded as we look to install eight (8) multi-purpose fields, accommodating six (6) baseball or softball diamonds and four (4) soccer, lacrosse or football fields. The entire complex will be handicap accessible. Eight  of the 28 acre parcel will remain forested to buffer neighboring homes along Kinne and Grover Streets. A major fundraising campaign will be conducted by the “Friends of DeWitt Parks” this spring and summer.

Warmest Regards,
Ed M.
