Butternut Creek Recreation and Nature Area is located off Kinne Rd. between Butternut Dr. and Cedar Bay Rd. This 67.5-acre parcel has .7 mile of unfinished paved pathway which serves as a trail for biking, inline skating, jogging and walking. The general topography of the site is flat, with a sharp slope at the south end. The western portion contains secondary forest growth and brush. The eastern portion of the site is dominated by extensive New York State Freshwater Wetland. Currently the area is generally undeveloped, with an asphalt bike path running north-south through the western side of the area.
Butternut Creek Recreation and Nature Area Development Project There are plans for an enhancement project which proposes to complete the existing paved trail and calls for the addition of .56 miles of woodchip trails and .43 miles of elevated boardwalk. Additionally, a canoe launch and fishing dock are proposed and will provide opportunity to access Butternut Creek. The Rotary Club of DeWitt has committed over $50,000 in support of the project. Cash donations and in-kind support are being sought from local businesses and groups. Consultants are being utilized to design the park, assist in the pre-development permitting process, develop all construction and bid documents, and oversee the work on the project. Volunteers will be used to take on various parts of the project as is appropriate such as general site clean-up, construction of benches, and the distribution of wood chips along the trails. Anyone interested in being part of this volunteer effort may contact Mike Moracco in the Recreation Office (315)446-9250 x 9. For information on the Fundraising Program click this link. |
