AGENCY OVERVIEW

The Town of Dewitt Police Department was initially accredited in 1998 under Chief James R. Delapp (Retired - 2001).  In April of 2002 Eugene J. Conway was sworn in as Chief of Police and has been committed to the New York State Accreditation Program ever since.  The agency continually strives for excellence as they work towards re-accreditation.

The Town of DeWitt Police Department has 38 sworn officers. The Chief of Police is the Chief Executive Officer of the agency.  Additionally, there is 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 5 Sergeants, 4 Investigators and 25 Officers. Services provided by the DeWitt Police include 24 hour patrol coverage, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, community policing, emergency service team, motorcycle unit, and youth education programs.

The Captain oversees the daily police operations and reports directly to the Chief of Police. Additionally, the captain serves as the NYS Accreditation Program Manager, Training Coordinator, Human Resource Manager and supervises the Clerical Staff. One Lieutenant is the Commanding Officer of the Criminal Investigation Division – Youth Services.  In addition, the C.I.D. Lieutenant oversees the Property Section, In-Service Training and acts as the I.T. Systems Administrator.  The second Lieutenant serves as the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Division, Special Events Coordinator, Community Policing Coordinator, Field Training Program Coordinator and is in charge of the department’s fleet.  The Patrol Division is further supervised by five (5) Sergeants assigned to one of the three watches: A-Watch (2300-0700 hrs), B-Watch (0700-1500 hrs) and C-Watch (1500-2300 hrs).

Although the DeWitt Police Department is small by many standards, its officers and citizens all benefit from this highly trained and professional law enforcement agency.  DeWitt Police Officers are routinely trained above and beyond mandated levels in order to provide the highest level of service.  Currently the DeWitt Police Department has certified Crime Scene Specialists, Accident Investigation Technicians, Identi-Kit Operators, Police Bicycle Officers, Police Instructors, SAVE Instructors, FBI Defensive Tactic Instructors, FBI Firearms Instructors, CPR/AED Instructors, EVOC Instructors and FBI Crisis Negotiators.
